SMF / VRLA batteries
Sealed Maintenance-Free (SMF) Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) batteries are the long-standing default: low upfront cost, widely available and easy to replace. Typical design life is 3–5 years, though real life depends heavily on temperature and how often they cycle.
Lithium-ion batteries
Lithium-ion (LFP and similar chemistries) cost more upfront but win on nearly every other axis: 2–3× longer life (often 8–10+ years), about half the footprint and weight, much faster recharge, higher tolerance to warm environments, and built-in battery management. Over the life of the system, the lower replacement frequency usually makes lithium the lower total cost of ownership — and it frees up valuable floor space.

How to make batteries last
- Keep the battery room cool — life falls sharply above 25 °C.
- Size the bank for the real backup time you need, with a little margin.
- Use battery monitoring (like an intelligent BMU) to catch weak cells before they fail.
- Test under load periodically; don't wait for an outage to discover a dead string.
- Replace whole strings, not single cells, to keep the bank balanced.
